I volunteer with a local theatre and have inherited a box of borrowed costume pieces. The available scarves share the same depth but differ between rose and muted terracotta. During rehearsal the copper-toned option seems to suit the actor very well. Near the entrance windows that same scarf creates a strong orange shadow. Rose loses energy on stage although it looks composed beside the lobby windows. We cannot alter either borrowed piece and buying replacements is outside our budget. I tried photographing both scarves with the phone locked to one white balance. The visual record is clear but the proper reference light is still uncertain. I checked this what colors look good on me page for a repeatable comparison method. The framework made it easier to note reflection separately from overall brightness. I am now considering the rose scarf with a slightly warmer stage gel. This seems safer because one scene takes place beside the lobby windows. Do experienced wardrobe volunteers choose for the dominant scene or the changing light? I mainly need a repeatable production choice rather than an absolute color label.
